Perform fast interactive SQL analytics against different data sources using the Presto distributed SQL query engine. With this practical book, you'll learn how to conduct analytics on data where it lives, including Hive, Cassandra, relational databases, and proprietary data stores. Matt Fuller from Data and Starburst Presto cocreator Martin Traverso show analysts how to manage, use, develop and even with Presto.
Initially developed by Facebook, open source Presto now is used by Netflix, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Twitter, Uber, and many other companies. You'll learn how a single Presto query can combine data from multiple sources to allow for analytics across your entire organization.
This book will help you:
Martin is the Co-Creator of Presto and a Software Engineer at Facebook where he leads the Presto development team. Previously, he was an architect at Proofpoint and Ning. Martin joined Facebook in 2012 when, at the time, Hive was the de facto platform for SQL analytics at Facebook. Seeing a need for fast interactive SQL analytics, Martin and 3 other engineers work to create what became Presto. In the Spring of 2013, Martin and the team rolled out Presto into production at Facebook where it was later made open source in the Fall of 2013. Since then, Presto has gained wide adoption both internal and external to Facebook.
Matt is a Co-Founder at Starburst Data (Starburst), the Presto Company. Starburst provides Presto Support and Services to organizations running Presto on premises or in the cloud. Prior to founding Starburst, Matt was a Director of Engineering at Teradata where he work to build the new “Center for Hadoop” division within the company. As a major part of this, Matt work to bring Presto to the enterprise market.
Matt led several teams at Teradata consisting of 20 engineers contributing to the open source Presto project since 2015. In addition to managing the engineering teams, he led the Presto product roadmap. Starburst was later formed from this team at Teradata.
Before Teradata, Matt was an early engineer at Vertica where he co-built the Query Optimizer. Matt is also a VLDB (Very Large Data Bases) published author and has US patents in the Database Management Systems space.
